Been struggling with this one for the better part of a month now. I've done a couple of test attempts but this is the first proper fake I've tried with facial editing and while not perfect I'm still pretty pleased with it. Was inspired to do a pic like this ever since Jack posted that wonderful Vincent pic a few months back.

While it's easy to think the NV one's a simple case of a green tinted, monochrome version of the original it's not; there's 8 additional layers involved. Looked at some genuine nv pics and tried to imitate the effect with the following:

• Tinkered with the saturation and lightness of the green for a while
• Used the Dodge tool to blow out the highlights and enhance lighter areas. Bright areas in nightvision pics are really bright
• Washed out the blacks
• Added a noise layer then scaled it up a bit and added random, brighter dots to simulate random dust flecks reflecting the IR beam
• Duplicated the layer, applied heavy Gaussian blurring and dropped the opacity to soften the image.
• Added a circular, black fade-out effect. Not entirely necessary, but gives a nice framing effect I think.

Okay no probs, always willing to share the love

First of all, it has to be said that angle's critical. Good angle and lighting matches are the cornerstone of any good fake, but I find there's little margin for variance with this kind or it doesn't look convincing. Look past the nose at the far eye - can you see it and if so, how much? Also look for whether or not the head is tilted towards or away from the camera? Look at the bottom of the nose. Can you see the nostrils?

Recognition's important as well and can be a big factor in side-on headshots. A fake's pointless if you can't tell who the person is, so before you start, have a good look at the headshot and question whether or not you can recognise the subject. If in doubt here you could post in the WIP section and ask for a second opinion (although if you doubt it's usually not a good sign).

Now that that's out of the way, here's a brief run through. I thought about how to go about this and decided to try overlaying and blending the original mouth into the celeb's face as well as integrating the celeb's face into the picture.

Obviously I cut out and placed the head shot first. Tried to match size, angle and position based upon the visible eye and nose of the BS. I'm going to use the original bodyshot's mouth so the base of the nose (where it first starts to protrude from the face) needs to be roughly in the same place. Then a big rectangular selection on the bodyshot encompassing all of the mouth up to past the nostrils and back to past the throat (may seem like an excessively large selection, but it's best to take more than you need as you can trim it back with a mask later). Then Ctrl+J to copy that to a new layer and raised that layer to above the headshot. Then I selected the headshot and set about getting a rough colour match. When that's close I mask the copied mouth layer and start removing the edge with a soft brush. I like to keep the opacity low (~20%) and patiently work away at the edges, bringing them in. I keep the original throat and chin as Emma's mouth is closed, but you could also try and manipulate the headshot's jaw. From there on it's a case of tinkering with colour, contrast, etc and tinkering with details like light, shadow and skin pattern. I hope that gives enough of an indication of how I went about this. If not, just ask.

Of course a celeb headshot with an open mouth is even better. Ideally you want to use as much of the original celeb's face as possible. Oh and you may need to skew the nose a bit as well as when the mouth is wide open, the top lip pulls at the base of the nose. Almost forgot about that

Hopefully you'll think that this doesn't look as complicated as it may first appear. And you'd be right but as with anything, the more patience and attention to detail you apply the better the finished article will be. If you're confident in your ability to colour match and blend, have a go - it's the best way to learn

Just take the time to get a good headshot/bodyshot match to work with first.
